Friday!

Happy Friday!

This morning in Math we practiced our estimating and decimal-addition skills using different food items you'd find at the grocery store. Working in small groups, we chose a set of items and then estimated a total before using different addition strategies to arrive at an answer. Our focus is to try to use mental math strategies rather than the traditional addition algorithm so that we have a better grasp of number sense instead of trying to memorize "the steps."

In Science, using the keys we created in class earlier this week, we practiced how to use a dichotomous key to sort a set of buttons. We switched our sheets with different groups and had the chance to see if we could easily follow another group's sorting questions to end up with the same results.

Finally, in Français, we dove a bit deeper into the biographical texts we have been exploring this week, noticing the different elements of a biography and the goal of why an author might write about a specific person. We then had a chance to explore the mentor texts we will be using to select a person we'd like to know more about.

Over the coming weeks, we will have a chance to research and write a short text about our person, with the goal of presenting our research to the class in the form of a short speech (similar to the "concours" speech that students are likely familiar with from their elementary schools). Stay tuned for updates as we continue to move through this exciting research, writing and presenting task! :)
