Friday!

Happy Friday!

Today's Math question:
Big Ben chimes the time every hour on the hour. (Once at 1:00, twice at 2:00 and so on).
How many times will Big Ben chime in one day? One week? In January? In one year?

Today's Math observation: geometric transformations are all around us!
Company logos are often symmetrical, meaning they display a horizontal and/or vertical reflection. Often times rotations and translations are present, too!
Take a closer look at the logos on your pantry items, on billboards - and all around!

Wednesday

Happy Wednesday, learning friends!
We had a great morning of learning!

In Math, we started with a mental math activity; how many different strategies can we use to solve a single Math equation? Try 39 + 55, or maybe 435 + 48?

Also in Math, we continued working on our "Art de translations." Take a look below!

In Science, we worked together as a class to classify our shoes! Fun! We asked specific yes/no questions to sort our shoes in different groups. Please ask me to explain this activity to you. What else can we classify? What kinds of classification systems do we see in the world around us?

We ended our morning in Français. We took time to read in partners, did a listening activity (that was pretty tricky!) and worked on our Zeniben article that we started last week. Please ask me about Zeniben and some of the differences between her school in India and our school here. They're pretty significant (and pretty incredible)!

Happy Monday!

Today in Science, we started investigating classification!
Working in our table groups, we looked at different ways we can groups items together by asking yes/no questions. We will practice our classification skills over the next few days by organizing all sorts of different things, with the goal of applying our classification skills further along in our new Diversity of Living Things unit.

Happy Monday!

Happy Monday!

Today in Math we started learning about "les transformations géometriques."
We took some time to practice "les translations" in our table groups; one student as the 'object' being moved, and the other group members had to call out specific movements for that person. We used the squares on the floor as our grid.

In Français, we took some time for daily reading and worked on our "résolution de l'année" sentences. Mme Careen showed us a great online tool - bonpatron.com -  that will help us correct our written work. Our sentences will be published in the school library on the "2020" bulletin board later this week. Stay tuned! :)

Friday!

We made it! We can check the first week of 2020 off of our list!
We had a busy morning of learning today...
In Math, we tackled another "nombre de jour."

In Francais, we worked on our new year's resolution sentences and began preparing our CFOO presentations.

In Science, we had a work period for our "béchers et bougie" experiment, with the goal of finishing our graph, questions and conclusion. If we were unable to finish our work in class today, we'll be bringing our Science folder home to finish up our work for Monday.

Have a great weekend! Stay warm! :)

Wednesday!

Happy Wednesday!

Today in Math we started a "nombre du jour" activity to review the place value of large and small numbers. Using a 10-sided die, we created a number and then used this number to answer the rest of the questions on our sheet.

We'll be working through a few more "nombres du jour" over the next couple of weeks so that we feel confident about place value as we move into fractions and new Math concepts. Fun! :)

*****
Agenda

1. "La paix" poems - students who were away before winter break are asked to please have the good copy of their "la paix" text completed by Friday of this week. Mme Careen will be in her room tomorrow (Thursday) at 12:15 for students who need additional time to revise and edit their text.
2. January Scholastic Orders - due Friday, January 24

Happy Tuesday!

Happy Tuesday!
Check out today's Thinking Classroom Math problem:

Painted Cube

Paint all the sides of a 3 x 3 x 3 cube. Once it is dry take it apart into its 1 x 1 x 1 unit cubes.
How many of these unit cubes have paint on three faces? Two faces? One face? No faces?
Explore for 4 x 4 x 4, etc.

Next up, in Français for our daily reading, we played Qui suis-je? games in small groups. Following a series of clues, we need to figure out the person that is being described in the picture scene.

We ended our morning in Science completing the first two trials of our 'beakers and candle' experiment. Tomorrow we will complete the third test and then calculate the average data set that we will use to graph our results.

Have a great afternoon! 🙂

It's GREAT to be Back!

Hello Room 208 friends!
Happy Monday! Happy New Year!
It was so wonderful seeing everyone back at school with so many stories to share!

We started our morning learning about what kept us busy over the break: sleeping in, eating candy and watching movies were very popular squares on our "Trouve quelqu'un qui a..." bingo!

We then paired up once to do a special "getting to know you" interview. We started by asking our partner 15 questions and then took their answers and put them into a silly "Mad Libs" style paragraph. This activity helped us get our brains back in to "french immersion" mode after a two-week break by having us read aloud and answer questions IN FRENCH! :)

Next up, les "gratte-ciels" - a spatial awareness Math activity that we worked on in randomized groups of 3.

We ended our morning in Science preparing for our first lab demo of the year. We'll be testing to see the relationship between the volume of a beaker and the length of time a candle can stay lit when covered. Stay tuned for pictures and updates coming this week on our blog! :)

Wishing you all a great week back! Happy 2020! :)
