Hello learning friends!
Today in Math was all about place value and BIG numbers!
We worked in table groups to guess numbers, compare numbers, add numbers, subtract numbers and write numbers!
Now that we've worked with BIG numbers, we will shift our focus to small numbers next week, taking a look at numbers less than 1. It's going to be great! :)
Have a super weekend! :)

Happy Thursday!
Hello, learning friends!
We had a great day morning of learning together!
In Math, we started learning about place value and listened to the story, Sir Cumference and All the King's Tens.
Next, in Français, after our daily reading time, we sat together in small groups and shared our goals with one another.
Lastly, in Science, we continued our discussion about the Sun and read the story, The Sun is Kind of a Big Deal.
What a fun day! :)

A Math question and a Dia de los muertos Craft-ivity!
A new day, a new Math problem!
"105"
In how many ways can 105 be expressed as the sum of at least two consecutive
positive integers?
Ex: 17
8 + 9
***
Ex: 63
31 + 32
20 + 21 + 22
After challenging our brains in Math, we challenged our brains with cursive writing, scissors and glue in Français! The activity we completed in class today is an extension "craft-ivity" for the Dia de los muertos article study we did in class last week. We are making our own unique "Day of the Dead" skeletons!
Step 1 - Fold a paper in half and write our first name in cursive letters. Step 2 - Cut around our letters WITHOUT cutting through the bottom fold! (This will become the rib cage of our skeletons). |
Step 3 - Create a backdrop for our skeletons with black and coloured paper. Step 4 - Trace hands and a face and glue all the pieces onto the backdrop. |
Step 5 - Give your skeleton some personality! Add a face, jewels and other accessories! Step 6 - Et voilà! Your very own skeleton friend! :) |

A Math Question to Try!
Saturday morning, Jack has a soccer game that starts at 8:30 a.m. It takes him a third of an hour to get ready, 4 minutes to make his bed, 13 minutes to eat breakfast, and 18 minutes to ride his bicycle to the soccer field. If he has to be at the field 25 minutes before the game starts, what time does he have to wake up?

And that's a wrap on Term 1!
Happy Thursday, learning friends!
We've had a busy week of learning together and are ready for a three-day weekend!
Today in Science we worked in individually or in groups to finish designing our Tomatosphere extension project. We came up with a possible Purpose, then worked to plan a list of materials and a method in order to carry out our experiment. Mme Careen will be assessing us of how detailed and easy to follow our experiment designs are. It's been fun to hear the different, creative ideas students are wanted to test!
In Français, we continued working in our small reading groups to finish our current article study, Dia de los muertos. We worked at the boards to write a draft of our resume before writing a final copy on our sheets. We then worked independently to answer comprehension questions about the article to demonstrate our understanding.
We will be following up our article-study with a fun activity in class next week. We will need to write our name in cursive for this activity, so some practice this weekend might be in order! :)
Working in our groups to complete "Prédire, " "Questionner" and "Clarifier." |
Working at the whiteboard to write the résumés for our text. |
Here are our résumés! |

Students need to have the good copy of their text written before beginning this next step. Any students who were not ready to use an iPad today are encouraged to complete their good copy over the week to ensure they have a full working period on Monday to complete their board.
2. Tomatosphère graph and questions - Monday
* Students had one last work period this morning to finish both their graphs and questions. Any students who are not finished should be coming home with their Science duotangs this weekend.
3. Science "Thinking" homework - Monday
* We will be starting a short design process activity in class on Monday. Students will be working either independently or with a partner of their choice to design a Tomatosphere follow-up experiment using the plants we've grown in class. This will be a 'theoretical experiment' - meaning students will not have to carry out the experiment itself, just create the plan (purpose, hypothesis, materials and method) for the experiment.
Over the weekend, students should consider with whom they would like to work and start brainstorming different experiment ideas they would like to test.
They will have four work periods next week to research, plan and write the steps of their experiment, so any 'thinking' they do this weekend will certainly help them be on task in class next week.

Lest We Forget
Together as a school community we gathered to honour those who fought for our freedom.
After the ceremony, we took time to reflect independently about the assembly, about
what Remembrance Day means to us and what we are thankful for.
- I'm very sorry for everyone who lost a family member because of wars. I hope everyone that died in a war is resting peacefully.
- I felt sad for the people that list their lives fighting for us.
-I liked when I put the candle on the cross. I liked the songs from the band and choir.
-I remember a picture of my great Grandpa with his military uniform on.
- I think of my great uncle who was in the army. My Grandma keeps his helmet on top of a bookshelf with a bunch of things with great stories. The helmet has a dent in it from a bullet.
- I thank my great Grandpa for going to battle for freedom and peace.
- I am thankful for the teddy bear I got after getting a heart transplant.
- I liked the song from choral.
- I'm thankful that nobody I know was in the war or was hurt in the war.
- I feel sad right now because of the sacrifice the brave soldiers of our country made for our freedom.
- I was touched by the little song and showing the pictures because that can stay with you forever if you have a good heart and a remembering brain for those who are not with us anymore.
- My great-great Grandpa, John Berg, had a revolver in the war and we still have it today.
- Today the ceremony was very well done and it made me remember people who fought for everyone so that people could be alive. It also made me remember that people have lost loved ones because they were keeping us safe.
- I'm thankful for the soldiers who fought for our country.

O Factor Tree, O Factor Tree...
Happy Monday, learning friends!
November is here and we're ready for the hard work we need to do over the next three weeks
to finish off strong in Term 1.
In Math, after our mental math assessment, we jumped in to learning about breaking down numbers into their smallest units. Did you know every number can be represented as a product of prime numbers?! It's true!
To help us with this process, we're using a 'factor tree' strategy.
Take a look:
We start with the number at the top (like the 'star' of a tree) and then work our way down until we have a series of prime numbers at the bottom. We can write these numbers in a multiplication equation, and when we check our answer, the product matches the number at the top! Cool!
Please ask me about factor trees and how Mme used them to do a bit of 'Math Magic' today in class.
Math is SO fun! :)
